Shade was a fool. She’d been doing well enough through her boldness but she was too arrogant and hadn’t been smart enough to back down. Still, at this point he had no intent of telling her too much about his life.
Alpha princess. He didn’t bother saying it, really if he was going to risk her ire it would be over things of more import than finding a word to tease her on. He considered her orders, tail twitching a bit thoughtfully, “When I wake in the morning I can patrol the wide border, no problem. As to ‘early’ I’d say around the same time as today would be a good compromise for us both?” He wasn’t going to be told tomorrow morning was an hour before the sun rose. Admittedly those were good times for hunting and he might even choose to be awake then at points, but not on princess’ demands.
To be fair, she wasn’t really asking for all that much and for playing the alpha was being decent at this particular moment. However Viper didn’t imagine things would be as entertaining for him if she actually wanted him to do a thing that would irk him. If he said ‘yes’ to her from the beginning without any self-interest she’d expect him to keep to it. Best to start this relationship with how he planned to keep it running. Viper didn’t need to be alpha, but he did plan to make sure he got an opinion when wanted.

I felt my head twitch a bit at his rather close to demand that he was the one defining early. I took a step closer to him and said in a faux calm, "Early is defined by when I wake. The sunrise changes it's time as the seasons change, so when I rise, you rise." She thought that was pretty fair. The sun did rise and set more quickly or more slowly depending on the season. In spring as it was now, the sun was up early with crisp air, but as winter came around he'd need to rise slightly before the sun. My body had adjusted to this schedule, and to inhabit my home he'd need to accept that this was not a bachelor's patch. There was an order to thing, rules, and expectations. Even my son knew those rules, and he was a pup, expected to froget things now and then. This male was going to exhaust me, I could already tell.
"For today your task is to hunt." I said firmly, explaining, "I do not yet trust you alone with my son so I will not be parting from him. I expect you to bring back something that all of us may eat." I raised a leg and gestured with my paw for him to go begin his hunt. Only an inexperienced mother would leave her son with a stranger, and I still had much to explain to Samuel about this stranger in our midst. There were going to be changes, and as much as I disliked them, they were necessary. Luckily I adapted well to new things. My son? Well, that was a different story. __________________________________

There was no major difference in his demeanor, no huge signs screaming that he wasn’t keen into her answer. It was just a subtle difference, muscles twitching as if to tighten then loosen for that second. Viper kept a relaxed appearance, but for the keen of eye it could be noted that it was an intentional appearance. He stood still, his head facing her but eyes looking more at her shoulder. The tail was again lower than hers but no lower than necessary. Cede her leadership, but not cower was the way he planned to keep it. How much of an ordeal was he going to make over the time he woke?
The issue was if he backed down to quick how would that look? Not that he was worried about his pride in the matter but how she treated him if he gave up easily. This first day would be meaningful as they each took in the other’s worth. Perhaps for now the best thing to do was drop the discussion on time. Silent assent could always be labeled later as dropping a topic without agreeing. Hunt alone wasn’t a big deal but hunting enough for all of them? Earlier he’d had to hunt alone but only feeding himself. Then again, if he was in her position wouldn’t he do the same thing? Well, maybe.
A smirk made after a moment, turning so his side is to her to take a few steps off, “Imagine I better go find that food then,” stated glibly. There was a sense of irritation in Viper that he refused to admit just yet. The prey he found was going to feel it though. It might have been better had he chosen to get into a larger pack. That too could have had its problems. In the end Viper imagined he would have been frustrated with whatever route he went, the black wolf wanted the benefits of a pack but admittedly had no desire for the responsibilities that came with it. Oh well, a wolf could dream. The princess could dream of being a god and he could dream of freedom and pack in a bundle.
Hopefully the son wouldn't be as irritating as the mom.
Stalking through the forest he’d spotted a herd of deer, and after a moment of wishful wanting decided to pass by. Taking down a deer alone would be wonderful but also risky. He had rather hoped for a bit of luck and finding an older or sicker one but apparently that wasn’t in his favor today.
The sun was higher up in the sky by the time he found his way back to where he’d left the princess Pennita. He was carrying the giant turkey by its broken neck, and a dead rabbit by its two ears. His head was raised up a bit as he ambled along, mostly so the dead bird wasn’t dragging on the ground.

I trusted him to bring back something of decent size, he was a large male after all. So I returned to the den and brought my son out, getting in some training. When Viper would return, he'd fine Samuel on his back, my jaws around his throat as he whined and explained he'd make a mistake by not expecting to need to jump. It would be clear I was teaching him the life-and-death decisions that could save him, especially if I was ever away. I released him when I heard the sound of a dragging body, nudging my son to help him stand steady. "Nice catch." I smiled, in a much better mood after spending time with my dearest son. He was the only one that meant something to me, he was my perfect outcome, my prince and heir - ah, I was getting carried away fawning over him again.
I rushed over to meet Viper half-way, grabbing the rabbit from his jaws to take off some of the weight in his mouth. I dropped it in front of my son, and he was quick to tear into the fresh flesh. With him content to eat the rabbit, I bit into the turkey and ripped off a chunk, sitting down and starting to eat. I was pleasant and shared with him, used to running on fumes. __________________________________
