Viper wasn’t in a hurry, he rarely was, so his gait was a rather lazy walk beneath the shade of the tree’s. He felt pleasure in watching the splashes of sun that made its way through the tree’s shade. The bird’s made a concoction of music mixed between those that whistled while other’s made a raucous cry.
Viper could smell the prey around even if none were so bold to show themselves. There were rabbits nearby, a good number, but he wasn’t hungry enough to chase them. There were surely almost as many rabbit burrow’s as there were rabbits. Not that Viper doubted his ability to catch one but there was no point in hunting when food was plentiful and his stomach content.
While the black wolf didn’t appear to be overly attentive to watching for any signs of danger, he wasn’t so foolish as to ignore any obvious warnings. Still, it is depending on the warning. Predator’s such as bear and cougars were best avoided. Another wolf’s territory he’d be willing to trod on. He knew how to sweet talk, submit, run or threaten as needed.
Viper missed the company of other wolves. They could be irritating but at times were amusing to watch. Mostly they offered him extra protection and hunting seemed less work when there were more to take part. Perhaps in the end though the real reason he wanted a pack had little to do with the logic and more to do with the instinct to be with his own kind.
Viper came upon a spot in the forest where there was an opening in the branches so that the sun covered a nice patch of land. Ah, now that looked perfect. Viper walked over to the spot and rested, bracing his one side up against an old log, resting his head on its surface. A deep pleased sigh, blinking from the sun’s light as he enjoyed the warmth. It brought in that laziest part of him. He wasn’t asleep, but he was quite content just letting time slip by as he relaxed there.

"Mother, look!" My son was still learning to contain excitement, and he shouted from the safety of the bushes before I could stop him. I quickly rushed to see what was so interesting, hunkering down and peering through the bushes at our "guest". He wasn't really trespassing, but he was too close for my comfort. I growled quietly and ordered my son to stay down before showing myself. With snow white fur against the greenery, I was easily spotted. The wolf before me was more like the wood wolves, whereas my ancestors came from the snow. He fit in among the bark and undergrowth as a mere shadow. With my tail held high I stepped forward and called out to him. "You are very near trespassing, gray wolf." I warned, ears up to hear his response. What did this wolf think he was doing lounging about? He didn't smell of blood, surely he hadn't gorged himself and was taking a food coma nap.
As I waited for him to respond I could hear my son trying to catch a glimpse of what was happening, but I payed him no mind. I knew better than to turn my back on any stranger. He was a big one, but I felt confident he posed no threat to me. I'd taken down many wolves who crossed me, and I wasn't about to be bested by what looked to be a lounging bum. Amber eyes were trained on the stranger, watching for any sign it was time to attack. Running was never an option. I was in my prime and I had to make sure my son saw who was the boss, no matter the situation. I was itching for some sparring, but wasting energy was a mistake I didn't make. The excited cry of a child at a discovery caused an ear to twitch. He already imagined overly zealous cheery pups that like to bounce around in a fruitless manner. Still, the pup was clearly not alone. He hadn't raised his muzzle yet but his eyes had flicked around watching.
Viper saw her coming, there was no rush to stand but he got up. His attentiveness was far more than it appeared, he was ready to spring to action the moment a rushed move was made to him. Calm slow movements tended to look less aggressive than something rushed. He was neither a coward to chase down nor a threat to attack.
He let the lady speak. It seemed she was as blunt with her words as she was easy to see with her coat color. "As you say, 'near trespassing," the lazy tone spoke with no challenge to it, "Will you attack me when I'm not even on your land?" He doubted she really wanted a fight right now. Well, by her demeanor she might love a fight but she had a pup nearby. If the two were alone she'd want to stay in good shape to guard her pup and fights should be considered well before being made. At least, that was his logic. He'd learned long ago that not all wolves were logical.
"So, alone are you? Other than your pup at least?" He couldn't know for sure of course, but he didn't scent any others and if there were others would they not be watching the pup while she scouted? Still possible flaws, but it seemed enough to base a strong possibility. Either way, hopefully with the comment he'd learn for sure.
He was standing now, his tail lowered a bit lower than hers, not challenging but not cowering. His body was relaxed and curved with no apparent sign of tension.

I stood firm as he brought himself to his feet, but I didn't miss the obvious lack of care he had for being proper. All I needed was a stupid wolf, we were proud creatures! How dare this lazy ball of fur act like he was not obligated to stand in another clean blood's presence. I had a God complex, but even I knew to acknowledge another wolf of full heritage. What a disgrace, I thought with a shake of my head as if there was a fly buzzing around my ears. Amber eyes slowly narrowed at his comment of my warning and use of the word "near" instead of "on". "Too close for the comfort of a territory owner." I explained, feeling like I had to dumb it down for him.
He took a lucky guess that I was alone, or maybe it wasn't just luck. I had to admit, his lack of fear was a desirable trait. Still, some level of fear was essential for survival. I heart my son rustle backwards when he was mentioned, knowing now was the time to run. He took off like I'd taught him, leaving me with the stranger. "Now it's merely you and I." I said with a small smirk. "Did you make a guess, or was it an educated guess? I doubt the latter, as you have yet to act as though you are in the presence of another wolf. We are great, we are prideful; show respect for your own." I snarled, offended for myself and all other wolves. Word Count: 260 Tagged: shard Notes: Heh, admitting to having a God-complex. XD

The wolf wasn’t appearing impressed at her show. She was sure making a big fuss. An ear twitched just a bit as the kid ran off. Well, that was that. Arrogant women, the best of the sun was going to sink at some point and she was wrecking his enjoyment of it. Viper didn’t yawn. He really wanted to, just to annoy her more. “I’m no threat to you. I’m just passing through.” Just skirting around the topic of how close he was to her territory. It would be a long debate about how close was too closet if they got into it. At least it would be his version of long. Then again maybe it would be short and she’d just attack. So full of herself. That explained why she wasn’t in a pack.
“You and I alone, true. Your son is alone. You might want to call him back. I don’t kill pups.” Well, ok so that was sort of a lie. Still, he had just kind of said it before thinking it through so certainly there was no tone of lying. Hindsight made the comment funny in his own mind. Did killing your own sister count as a pup killer when you were a pup at the time too? Does 1year count as pup though really? Oh well, a think to decide another day. “I don’t recall pack’s having kids follow along as territory is scouted. A mother with a young pup would also not be as likely to be the one wandering far off. Not impossible, but not normal. Challenging me with the pup? Also not normal.” An irritated rumble, not at her but at all this pointless chatter. “I was enjoying myself where I was, I stood up for you. Going to keep posturing? Even if you win a fight, should you get injured it’s going to be harder to protect your kid.”
He could give up and walk away but the truth was despite his lazy appearance and his surface irritation he was also amused. He hadn’t played with anyone in a long time. Watching her mood shifts was close enough to play for him. It would remain play so long as this didn’t get to excessive or come into a real fight. He didn’t want to fight her any more than he spoke of her fighting him. Getting injured because of pride when your alone is a mistake for puppies. It could get a wolf killed, possibly by starvation when you can’t hunt.

I could have told a legend of all the times I'd hear someone say they weren't a threat or just passing through. Did they really think they were fooling anyone? I couldn't help the little giggle that came from my throat, mouth closed so the sound was stifled. I nodded to confirm my son was alone, my tail swishing as I began to relax. He wasn't an immediate threat, and if he did lash out we were at a safe enough distance that I'd be able to prepare myself. "He is in no danger. My son is smart, smarter than a lump of fur like you. If you expect me to believe for a single moment that he is safe in the presence of any stranger you are disrespecting me as a mother." This was said with a bit more of a snarl, teeth showing. I hadn't survived on my own for a year by trusting others.
Letting his conclusion roll off my back was the best thing for this scenario. He'd simply been done a process of elimination, a simple method but also one that took someone who didn't second-guess themselves. He had some kind of intelligence. "So you aren't a complete fool." I teased with a grin, a devious glint in my eye. "I can't decide if you are a shameful excuse of a wolf, or just barely not across that line." I mocked, watching his reaction. __________________________________

This woman was too much. All she wanted to do was fight, verbally if not physically. He had wanted to rest and she was definitely not giving him that, “Fine, fine. You are right, terribly sorry.” Did he really sound guilty? Not at all. More like grandiose tolerance, followed up with a sigh. “Look, miss. You have my apology, now what do you want? I was not traveling into your territory merely resting near it. You want me to avoid your land? I can.” Simply put.
Did he want to put up with her? Well, to be fair he rarely liked anyone. She was arrogant and stuffy which was a pain. If he was to be around her long term and she kept up that attitude they might have some issues to work out. To be fair though he knew this was proper enough, he was a stranger an she had a puppy. Women with puppies were always irritating, doubly so if you aren’t pack. “As to being a shameful wolf? Probably just slightly above that line. I’m alive, those too shameful die. Of course I am alone, that doesn’t speak well. Then again, aside from your pup so are you.”
Glancing about the scenery, not that his eyes ever fully left her. “I like it here, I assume your territory is pretty much the same. I can leave or I can stay and help out. What do you want? The sun won’t stay up in the sky forever and we are wasting the pleasures of the day.” The moon was nice also of course, but the moon was not in the now, and he liked enjoying the ‘now’ when possible.

I let a soft hum tell him I wasn't sure what I wanted out of this exchange just yet. Something, absolutely, would be my reward for not already attacking this lazy wolf. The first truly intelligent thing I heard from him was that wolves too shameful merely died. I bobbed my head as an agreement, glad we were finally on the same page about at least one thing. I back-tracked to answer his question with a simple, "I want nothing from you except your respect, as I am due. All wolves are, unless acting foolish." I explained, chest out to show I was not shy about how great I considered myself. I was going to be the queen, and those who weren't with me would be dead. It was with that thought that I began to consider something else, something I hadn't considered in a very long time.
"I wouldn't kill you for following me back to the den." That was as close to a yes as he'd get from me. There was still much to be determined about him, but something told me he could be a vital part of my plan. A position I'd expect a female to take, but it didn't really matter so long as the position was filled. Turning around, I gestured with my head through the thicket. "Come," I beckoned. "I will show you my home." I slunk through a thinning part of the thicket and began to trot through the heavy forest underbrush. I brought him first to the running stream, leaning down to lap up a bit of the clear water for myself. I looked at him, expecting him to take a sip as an agreement we would share the water. __________________________________

This lady was so full of herself it had to be a miracle that she could find room in her belly to eat or drink. Only the lone moon knew what gave her so much arrogance. Whatever. She was the queen, the almighty, the most amazing wolf ever met. Blah, blah, blah. Noted.
Thank goodness, that worked. He followed her through the thicket, trotting along with long easy strides. There was a passive sense of confidence to him. Calm in the assurance he could tackle whatever may happen. Confident enough to back down without appearing to injure his pride. Easier to deal with her this way. If she turned out to be a good partner this would work well. If not, well, at least she wasn’t snarling. If she let her pup get overly close he’d have something to hold over her should she push him too far. That would be the end of their companionship though, so he’d work with tolerating her arrogance.
When they stopped at the water he did lower his muzzle, lapping up a bit. He took another moment to look about the scene. Yes, this would do. Relaxing next to the water sounded pleasant as well. This place would probably be wonderful at night when the moon was full.
The movement had given him time to consider her and likely she’d been considering him the same time. “Would it mean much to you,” the black wolf asked, “If I’d given you all that respect before I even knew you? I respect every wolf on appearance and I’m bound to respect some who don’t deserve it.” See now? He was offering up a conversation. “I’m a peculiar sort. I don’t waste energy, or freely give out respect till I see if its necessary.” Another lap of a bit of water, “However, that means if I give it, then its sincere.”
Didn’t that sound pretty? Viper liked the sound of it even as heard it. Really, his version of respect given to others tended to be a shallow thing. Oh. What name to give her? He had shifted it up more than once depending on who he met and what sort of an appearance he wanted to make. ‘Fidget’ would get no where with a tough wolf like her. “Hmm… manners.” As if thinking through a basic notion. “My name is Viper, I was born to the Hidden Moon pack three springs ago.” There, name, age, and originating pack.

I watched as he drank from the river, content that he must have found this place suitable. I thought it was a snug little corner, thus my taking control over it. It could use work, but the freedom of the plants was a masterpiece I didn't have the heart to destroy. I had seen my pack trample annoying shrubs that got in their way to make paths or bedding and it truly bothered me. I had always recycled the earth, using the fall leaves to make my bed. But now it was spring, and there was no need for extra warmth.
I smirked as he spoke, water dripping from my jaws to create a small ripple in the already-moving stream. "It would nothing to me." I told him bluntly and honestly. Sweet-talking me or making me feel special was a wasted attempt. At least he acknowledged he was odd, that was a point in his favor. Another point in his favor, proper manners when he got around to using them. Viper, he stated as his name. A pack name I faintly recognized, and his age. "Ah, you in fact are a young male! I'm four winters. Born in the snow. Fitting, wouldn't you say?" I teased about my coat color and the season I was born, it was something I enjoyed talking about. I had been expected to do great things, and my birth had been so celebrated. But, the definition my mother and I had of greatness varied drastically.
"If you wish, you may sleep here tonight. If the night ends in a pleasant sunrise, I may show you next the den, although there is no space for you." That was more or less just a smack to his face that he wasn't important at all. And of course, he wasn't trusted yet. I turned and let my tail brush up under his neck, a seductive gesture to let him know he was being considered. "Sleep well, Viper." I whispered as I left him to get comfortable. __________________________________
