Well, he had finally managed to unruffle her feathers it seemed. Heh, probably wouldn’t take more than stepping on a twig the wrong way to get on edge again. Fortunately for them both he was good at being low key. Tolerating her might well be worth it though. Not only due to finding company but in a place as comfy as this. There were a lot of worse places to set oneself up.
Snarling at him to now teasing him? Amazing how powerful the term ‘I’m sorry’ is. He didn’t even need to mean it. “Survived the winter, eh?” There was mild amusement on his features, “I had a white pup in winter I’d fear it would get buried under snow and we’d never notice.” Fear for a pup? Well… maternally? No. Got to have at least one pup live to keep your namesake going right? Help create it, let the woman raise it, and it’s all done. Come to think of it, Viper wondered what happened to the kid’s father.
At her ‘generous’ offer he glanced about, stretching out with rump going a bit in the air for a few seconds before plopping down as if falling into a silk mattress. “Looks pleasant. Goodnight” adding on “princess” more quietly and with dry amusement after she’d walked off some ways. Like he wanted to get into a small den with her and that pup. The kid would probably keep him awake somehow and she’d wake him up early for some reason or another. No, he’d much rather spend the night here.
With her gone he was finally able to relax! He spent some time lounging before he ever bothered sleeping. Sleeping at night was nice, but so was sleeping during the day. It was quite remarkable he stayed in shape with all he loved to do nothing. Still, a wolf had to hunt, and guard, and travel if alone…but this was his favorite thing to do. He slid off to sleep just remembering the pleasant sights of the day.
Mornings ray’s hit the wolf’s eyelids and he did what seemed most proper, threw a paw over his eyes and made a small groan sound. The sun was great, but not when it was down low and getting in his eyes. Fine, fine that wasn’t going to work. The black wolf stood up, turned around and flopped right back down to face away from the sun.
Unfortunatly the sun was up, and moving had left him awake. No going back to sleep and there were things to be done today. Standing up he shook out his coat, and made his way back to the water’s edge for a morning drink. As he drank he started letting his mind roll through the days events he imagined taking place. Might as well work at not turning her into some angry hornet who got its home rattled.

"I remember hearing that very concern." I laughed, amused that it would be a running joke. Though I carried myself as a warrior, I was still a female and I knew my features softened when I let them, into a deceivingly sweet gentle face. My quiet voice helped quite well, as long as I didn't raise it to a shout. I left him without a return of proper manners, but it didn't make me lose any sleep at all. I curled up beside my son that night and fell asleep with one ear perked to alertness.
The morning rays hit the ground in front of the den; I had chosen this spot for many reasons, one being that the entrance faced away from the rising sun and thus in turn had a charming view of the sunset. It meant a pleasant beginning and end to the days. I pushed myself up to my feet, nuzzling my son. He was thirsty, so I decided it was time they meet. Yearling rusty-pelted son in tow I trotted to the stream, bowing my head in a polite greeting when I saw Viper had remained throughout the night. I stood between him and my son as he scurried to the water and stuck his entire mouth in to gulp down water.
When he was satisfied, he thanked me and darted off towards the den once again. "He will be upset I don't have time to train him today," I said a bit absently as I took my turn to drink. When I was satisfied I looked to Viper and offered a gentle smile. "It seems you are taking a liking to my home. Samuel may not be happy another male is in our midst... but I think you could be very useful." Straight to the point. __________________________________

Viper turned his head to watch the two as they approached. He was torn between thinking this was a good and bad idea. He was going to have to put up with her showing off how grand she was but when the whole song and dance was over the area would be nice. Hopefully the more she warmed up the easier she was to deal with.
With the two at the river’s edge he politely walked a short distance away. To be polite or to just avoid more aimless chatter while the kid drank? Whatever made one happy to believe. The little princess was playing nice and sweet today, wonder how long that would keep up. Probably however long he treated her as such. “He likes training does he?” It was enough to say Viper had paid attention when learning lessons that were important in his mind. He probably learned more through practical experience alone than he had in the pack.
“So, young prince Samuel and…” a specified pause, “his mom.” Let that fall a bit flat as if to make a point. “Sammy doesn’t need to worry about it. I’m not really one to steal anyone’s fun.” As long as their fun didn’t get in his way. A small smirk at hearing he might be useful, “The moon might be about to fall from the sky,” drawled out, “might be useful is even a step higher than what you said last night.”
He thought about trying to get the boy back to at least attempt to get them fish for breakfast but that probably wasn’t the best way to start this little relationship. Horrible as it was if Viper wanted to have a pack he’d better aim to please for at least a few days. Well, please within reason. He wasn’t one to let himself get walked all over after all.
“Considering it’s the two of you, I imagine I’d be useful also. The freedom of being alone is a grand thing, but you know as well as I that wolves aren’t meant to be alone. A mother and a pup still basically accounts for alone.” His gaze went towards where the pup went, “Another wolf around here is better for him to, not healthy growing up without others.” Not that being around other wolves had helped Viper not turn into a complete ass but hey, he did know how to be social.”

Amber eyes watched him closely as he observed my son, ready to protect him if there was any hint of aggression. Thankfully the brief meeting went well, and with my son returning to the safety of the den I was able to give Viper my attention in a less do-or-die mood. "He does." I confirmed, listening to him. He was very obviously stating without using the words that I owed him my name. "Pennita." I watched closely, wondering if he had heard of the "disaster child" of one of the far packs. From where he was born I knew I had grown quite a distance, but rumors spread like wildfire. I was the ruthless pup of the beloved queen, both parents so sweet and loving... they thought I was a monster. And they had been right.
I shook my fur free of debris I had picked up in the den as he went on about the moon falling. Surely I hadn't been so brutal, that had been me being polite! What a shame. As he went on about the lone wolf being not all it was claimed, I just nodded and lifted my nose to the sky to take in the scents. A normal morning, so I turned attention back to my guest. "I warn you, if you choose to stay, you will be put right to work. Hunting, patrolling; and whatever else I decide you will be useful for." A fair warning that he wouldn't be allowed to be lazy anymore. I let out a soft howl as I turned and led him east, explaining, "You will join me on my patrol this morning as training." I called, expecting him to follow without a disagreement. I wouldn't allow disobedience. __________________________________

Viper Cruella De Vil Haha Viper would of found this song pretty fitting for you Had Viper heard of that name? Perhaps. Some faint memory of it being used in derogatory fashion. Apparently, whatever it was he’d heard about it the information wasn’t enough to bother remembering precisely. She had a personality that could certainly create such comments. The thought wasn’t even meant snidely, just a consideration of how others would perceive her. A slight nod to acknowledge her name, “Princess Pennita,” the title ‘princess’ was just his version of mild amusement to her demeanor, a nickname that seemed to suite her.
True, it was his nature to be lazy but he was well aware joining up with her would mean work, at least for a while and to some extent. Viper was his own wolf, he’d balance getting the jobs done as needed with finding time for himself. Hopefully she intended their little pack to grow so other wolves could take up some of this work. He didn’t bother to respond verbally to her warning, following along would be a good enough response to accepting her words.
He watched her first few strides away then followed suite. Training? Did she really think he needed training at this point? “How much land do you claim as yours?” Plenty of land to roam at his leisure would be nice, and if he could generally do it at whatever pace he felt like this could be a relaxed task. Viper had no doubts it would be anything but relaxing today. Today’s ‘training’ he imagined would be trying to make a point to remember she was in charge. Still, how much could she have considering she was the only one to watch over it.

"Just Pennita, don't kiss ass." I warned him with a smirk, flicking my tail in agitation as I led him off to start patrol. His question only received a simple, "Enough." before I pointed to the river's edge with my nose. Then I turned to the edge of the clearing. "This is the wide border. Into that thicket ahead of us is past my scent-marking." I led him this time out into the clearing and began to backtrack, circling around the den so he didn't yet know where it was. We came to a shorter border where the river and clearing only had about six feet of a distance. "This is the rear border." I explained, turning to face Viper. "These two areas are checked every morning and every sundown before we dare relax to sleep. If you smell a stranger, you are to question them vigorously." My ear twitched at a sound, but I only saw a rabbit hop by us. I didn't bother to catch it, it was too small of a meal. Over-all, my land between the two borders was a mere mile. But it had everything I needed, thicket, a den, and water. It was really an ideal place for a small pack to grow in secret, and that was exactly what I had planned.
After the tour of my borders, I led him back to the half-mile wide border, which usually required a double-patrol because of the size. As I walked I told him, "I will not tolerate laziness or insubordination. You males are prone to thinking you are dominant, but in my world," I turned to him with a smirk on my lips and a dangerous gleam in my eye. "You are a hyena male. Do you know how hyenas function?" I asked, hoping I could explain to him what it meant to reinforce my position. __________________________________

Viper Having fun Was there a small amused sneer at his warning of kissing ass? At least it was a nice little pet name he’d offered up. A smile grew on his face for a moment as he imagined what other word might fit, ‘Witch’ was the first thing that came to mind. Wonder what her reaction would have been to that. While Viper walked he took in the pleasant morning scents, noted two squirrels arguing over who had rights to a tree branch, and just tried to enjoy the scenery.
When she spoke at the wide border he glanced about, letting his eyes tracking the motion and a flick of an ear at her words work as acknowledgement. As he moved with her he considered the path they took, kept an eye on areas where paw tracks seemed more frequent that they might create more of a trained path. Trying to glean extra information he could but not taking time to pause and make it obvious. Quite frankly he had no problem with her thinking a bit less of him. Being underestimated was a grand thing when in a bad spot. He just had to balance it with her not thinking so little of him as to cause other problems.
Viper let his wandering attention focus more on her when she spoke of the tasks he’d be doing. “No problem,” Idly stated. If he ran into a stranger on their land he’d probably do as she said unless he had better reason not to. It was always that simple. Of course it would be a bur in his coat if she got pissy at him so as long as she didn’t push too hard he’d probably go along with what she wanted. “Pennita,” her name a soft deep rumble from his throat, one might imagine some warmth in them, though his body demeanor still showed simple indifference. The rest of the words were a simple querry the deeper rumble now gone, “Have you seen me once waste time wanting to debate dominance with you?” She was so damn defensive over being in charge and he didn’t figure he needed that. It was getting old. “Never met a hyena to ask them.” Stated blandly.

He showed no resistance, and it was relaxing. I'd delt with one too many males that thought the proper alphas always had a big package. They were absolute fools, but he seemed less cocky. It was both a mental and physical relief, he wouldn't be bothering me over sexist debates. I was quite pleased, and quite content with the possible outcome he provided. Success, of course, was what I was referring to. He had potential, and it was turning into promise. "I haven't," I agreed at his comment about dominance debates. "But you must know male wolves tend to think they are the "genetic" leaders, having lived in a pack. I'm making sure you don't need a reality check." I explained my reasoning, hoping it made sense to him.
Ooh, I could have bounced in my excitement that he didn't know what a hyena was. Turning around to face him fully, and with excitement overflowing I began to explain. "Hyenas are a matriarchal species. Females command to males, who are low-ranking and submit to even low-rank females. They are nothing but sperm donors." I chuckled softly and said, "I don't plan to run my pack exactly in that manner, but female hyenas even have a faux male sex organ to show their dominance. I was teased with the title "the Hyena of Wolves", and I kept it." I said with a proud grin. "Simply put, I am your princess, your queen, and your god second only to nature's will." My God-complex was showing, but I didn't care, as I hadn't ever in the past. __________________________________

Viper was about to respond but he turned his head to snap at some black fly that had landed on his shoulder. The fly got a warning glance before looking back to the princess of wrath. “Had a sister in my pack, Shade, who threw her weight around as much as any of my brothers.” The memory was a look back on his youth, of course it had a nasty ending with her death. He’d leave that part out.” All the tenacity to fight for status had just seem such a waste of energy in his mind. Viper had a knowledge of who he was and his competencies and never felt need to prove it. “I know those you refer too though.”
Viper thought of adding how he felt most of those who needed to show off their superiority did so because they lacked his confidence. Fearful of who could take away their image. Somehow he doubted she’d appreciate that particular view. He listened to her explanation of Hyena’s, feeling a small smirk growing at her enjoyment of the subject. She liked to mock male wolves for their belief of rights to superiority yet enjoyed the idea of the females taking that same role and thus having the same ego as the males. “I see. Well, now there you are claiming yourself princess and earlier you didn’t like me saying it.” Yes, he knew the reason, but that didn’t stop his mild amusement over it. “I’ll acknowledge you as the alpha. As to the rest … I’m not really one to dote. I’ll call you princess as it seems to fit your ego and it sounds cute. So, Princess, if we can agree to obedience without reverence we are in good shape.”

My head slowly moved in a nod as he told me the brief telling of his sister. I said after a moment of thought, "Unless she had the wit to back up her brawn, she was a fool." I didn't mind dissing the female I never met, she sounded like a complete fool who was high on herself with no real reason to be. I was a bit high on myself, but that was merely because of what I had accomplished. Most single-mother wolves didn't make it this far, and it was even less likely that their pups would. At least I had a reason to be proud of myself and confident that I could take on the world.
A huff and an eye-roll was my response to him being picky about the word "princess". "For now," I began impatiently, "Alpha alone will do." I said very clearly, not willing to let myself be called such a silly name. With a twitch of my ear I nodded and agreed, "You will wake early and patrol the wide border. I will check the border nearer my son and den. Are we at an agreement?" I asked, giving him the chance only this once to refuse and leave peacefully. __________________________________
