action speech thoughts cerkowah The forest had burst to life since the winter, and even more since only a few weeks prior to which he'd met a wolf not far from where he was at present. Drokhan found himself enjoying the cool, but not too cold weather, a breath of wind slipping within his pelt, but not chilling him. It made him feel a little spry in his walk, putting more of a pep to it, as he trotted alongside the stream, weaving around some rocks, jumping over others. The scent of trout touched his nose, and it twitched - had he not eaten only a couple hours before, he would have been drawn to hunt the waters as he was so accustomed to doing. Fish, after all, was his favorite thing to eat, next to rabbit. The fox pounced upon a boulder, standing tall for once as he surveyed the area around him. The forest was thick, alive with the chatter of insects stirring from where ever they happened to go in the winter. The sun bathed him in this particular spot, lulling him into a sort of peaceful comfort. He lowered his haunches, settling in to just enjoy the sights. It was quite beautiful, Drokhan noted. The sky above was crisp and blue, peppered with wisps of white as they hurried along. The soil he could see was rich, hydrated, ready to give life to anything that may take root within it. The leaves were vibrant, the trees and other plants breathing steadily in the unity that comprised the forest's sway of life; in one direction, out in the other. Drokhan followed this pattern unknowingly, his own breath becoming a slow steady constant expansion and constriction of his lungs that was seamless, uninhibited by conscious consideration. The stream was alive, babbling softly, chatting with the forest, the stones, sweeping along, the same stream never being in the same place in its constant unbroken rush. He could see the bodies of fish darting about, the squiggles of minnows and tadpoles flickering at the very edge of what he could see, their size so small they almost became one with the water itself if they dared to muddle past the eddies between the rocks, the bank and the stream's center current. Movement caught his attention, and he turned, focusing on it, furrowing his brow to around the foliage to catch another glimpse of the movement. Perhaps it was another creature? He angled his ears forward, listening for the sounds of paw steps - or really anything that would give some indication of something being there. "Hello?" The fox called out curiously, feeling almost silly since clearly there was no one there. He sniffed, and there was nothing. He couldn't hear anything either! He'd only glimpsed movement, and the more he thought about it, the more of a fool he felt. It had only been a trick of the forest, he decided, turning back towards the stream to gaze wondrously upon the world around him. so excite. c:

> Valentin < Valentin's round ears pricked up at the sound of running water and he grinned, quickening his pace. The crisp air did not bother him, the light wind brushing his fur in odd directions. He stared up at the tall trees, their green leaves rustling in the breeze. Everything was so tranquil and clear on this cool day, and Val took a deep breath, exhaling it slowly. Alongside him walked his friends, staying in silence for once as opposed to arguing. Philly was bouncing along, his pure white coat standing out harshly against the dark ground. Gaston, the elk looming above them both, held his head high, ears tilted forward as he watched attentively. Wishing he could calm his friend's paranoia, Valentin rested his bushy tail on the elk's leg. The deer looked down at him, slightly startled before smiling gently. Val smiled back, trying to look reassuring. Suddenly, the elk froze, his ears pointed straight up and his tail raised. ' There's something there...' he muttered, pointing his nose in the direction of the creek. ' I'm sure it's just someone enjoying the water,' Val tried to soothe, but Philly had other plans. He leapt up and down excitedly, his ears flat. The tiny dog seemed even more energetic than usual, his short tail wagging so fast it could hardly be seen. 'It smells good!' Philly cried, chasing his tail in circles before stopping and going almost completely still, pointing his nose in the direction of the stream, ' I've never smelled that before!' Giving Philly a confused look, Valentin tried to approach him, slightly worried by the strange look in the dog's eyes. Before he had a chance to say anything however, the tiny white shape blasted into the trees, his body becoming nothing but a white smear that barely rustled the surrounding leaves. Snorting with annoyance, Gaston looked down at Val, his brown eyes full of annoyance. Valentin looked up at him, his bright yellow eyes apologetic, before running after the small dog, running much slower than him as his fur kept catching on sticks and leaves. Finally appearing on the bank of the stream Valentin blinked in surprise at the red creature already there. Philly was bouncing around the creature's legs, and it took several seconds for Val to remember where he had seen something like this before. Oh yes! A fox, that's what they were right? Valentin approached slowly, not wanting to call Philly over and seem crazy, but he watched the dog closely, hoping he did not do anything stupid. Looking back, Valentin saw Gaston still standing in the trees, the thick foliage covering most of his body. " Greetings," Valentin nodded his head respectfully, padding over to the bank of the stream. The silvery body of fish flitted about under the surface and while he was slightly hunger, he detested getting his pelt wet. There was just so much fur there, and water weighed him down to almost twice his weight. Sitting down and keeping his paws a safe distance from the water, Val looked up at the bright red creature, his head tilted to the side. authgrim Philly is a white fox terrier so I thought it would be interesting for Val to have to deal with his odd urges

action speech thoughts cerkowah The more he listened for a few moments, the more certain Drokhan was that he had only imagined something being there. It wasn't until a scent he'd never encountered before touched his nose, that he realized that he had in fact known something was there. He scanned the undergrowth, curious as to what was about to saunter out to greet his sight. It wasn't until movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention did he realize that he'd been looking in the wrong direction entirely. The fox tilted his head to the side, his large ears strained forward as he looked over this creature that had popped from the foliage. He had never seen anything like this creature, and what it was exactly perplexed him wholly. The scent told him that it - whatever it was - was male. He blinked, both eyes, despite the right being clouded and sightless, focused on the being tracking his every movement. Drokhan noted that it was fluffy, and appeared to be much more fur than actual being, and while this wasn't particularly odd in the fox's mind (as foxes were quite the thickly furred species as well, often appearing more fluff than fox, especially in certain seasons more than others, and some individuals more than others), he did think that the fact that the thing's paws seemed to be the only things sticking out of the fur. Its tail seemed to be a pillar of fur, perpetually puffed. Everything about it was round or rounded in one way or another, and this, Drokhan thought, was quite interesting. He realized that for everything he noted on this strange creature, that it seemed to be noting something about him. They were both looking at each other with an intense curiosity. The fox followed the others' gaze, curious as to what he was looking at. Something besides him? Perhaps he'd glimpsed a fish flash in the water - this he could explain fully, but the glance behind, back into the forest was perplexing to the narrow-faced fox. Was there something back there? He couldn't see anything, nor had he scented anything beyond the solitary creature that was now padding to the water's edge. It sat down, close to the water, but giving it its space. Drokhan guessed this was perhaps from a desire to not get one's paws wet, and he instantly came to the conclusion that perhaps this male, whatever he was, was possibly a little finicky in nature. "Greetings," it spoke and nodded in greeting. It surveyed for a moment, before looking back at him. He was rather taken back by the vibrancy of the creature's eyes, which were a startling yellow hue, far brighter than any he'd seen on anything else. His own eyes were a rich color of hazel flecked with a honey-hued amber, with clearly only one that had any decent sight at all. The other was good for shapes, and majority colors, but it wasn't much for detail. Drokhan dipped his head politely, as he spoke in a soft voice, "greetings to you as well." He was quiet for a moment, debating if he wanted to be brash, or keep himself from stepping on territory that may offend the other. He decided to keep himself polite until he could tease out what the other's reaction may be to a blatant question such as 'what are you, exactly?' Despite the desire to ask this, he would save it. "How are you on this fine day by the stream? Who may I have the pleasure of talking to? I myself go by Drokhan, if you're curious." The fox let his tail twitch slightly, showing a hint of how curious he was.

> Valentin < Valentin shifted his gaze from his friends to the fox, noticing his curious gaze. Had he noticed the weird actions Val had done? He knew he was not supposed to look around the way he often did, as him looking off into nowhere could creep most creatures out. Trying to shake off the slight awkwardness, Val smiled. The fox was decent sized, larger than him as most things were. Since he lacked knowledge in foxes, he could not tell if this particular specimen was of average or peculiar size. The bright orange pelt confused him, as he figured it must be a hindrance for hunting and the like. Val only saw him against a stony background and the creature stuck out like a sore thumb. Its tail was thick and bushy, and was a very odd shape. It was rounded, coming to a fine point at the end and swelling in the middle. Valentin was used to the stick-like tails of felines and wolves, but this particular creature was different. His limbs were long and slender, clearly built for speed. There was some black on his legs and ears, but it was not enough to mask the vibrant orange hue. With a long, slender snout, the creature was essentially Val's polar opposite. Where Val was short and stout, the fox was long and slender, his body a streamlined form that seemed to cut through the air with ease. Compared to Valentin's bright honey eyes, the fox's were a dull hazel, and Valentin tilted his head to the side as they examined each other. There was silence for several moments, but Val did not find it an uncomfortable one. The gap in between them was a respectful one, and Valentin did not sense any sort of tenseness from the ginger animal. Perking up at the fox's words, Valentin smiled brightly, his short muzzle giving it a slightly off appearance. He noted the fox talked with a weird formality and, with his never ending socialization skills, attempted to copy it. " Hello Drokhan, I am Valentin," he dipped his head respectfully, his tail wrapped around his paws. " A pleasure to meet you." Valentin sensed Drokhan's curiosity, sure the fox was wondering what he was. Some creatures could tell he was a feline by scent, but others were simply baffled. ' He doesn't know what you are!' Philly giggled, hopping back over to Valentin and skipping about him. ' Whatever he is, he must be an idiot! You're obviously a cat!' Staying silent, Val simply placed his tail over Philly's mouth, not wanting to disturb Drokhan. ' Shush Philly, I'm sure he's plenty smart' Valentin scolded, still not looking at the tiny dog. Despite this fact, Val could sense the white creature's irritation at being called out, and he felt Philly shrink away from his touch. He would have to console the dog later, now was the time to focus on the actual creature standing in front of him. authgrim

action speech thoughts cerkowah Drokhan was acutely aware that this creature was observing him for every bit that he was observing him. Like the other, Drokhan noted their stark differences, and almost found it comical just how opposite they were to each other. Long and thin, short and round. Angular, and curved. It made the encounter all the more interesting for Drokhan, and he wondered if the other felt the same. They certainly seemed to have the same level of curiosity for each other, the fox judged. His ears twitched as the other spoke, after brightening up. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Valentin," the fox dipped his head respectfully. "If I may... Inquire, without sounding rude... May I ask what you are? I've never happened upon another like you and I'm quite the curious individual, you see..." He trailed off slightly, unsure of what else he should exactly say. He had other questions of course, but at what point was it simply too rude to ask upon the first meeting? Perhaps later on in the conversation - he certainly wanted to know what the other kept glancing around at, and kept following. He was certain there was nothing around him, and so it made him wonder if this thing, this thing named Valentin, was an individual who saw things that weren't there. Drokhan had encountered individuals like that before. The madness of the mind was nothing that was surprising to him - it seemed to be quite common when life was so harsh as it was for all animals. Of course, he was sure somewhere there was something where life was easy, but for the forest dwellers, he knew of no such things personally. He was fine with it, but he knew that at some point things could certainly take a toll on the mind of an individual, and warp it to where it worked against them. He wouldn't allow himself to make such presumptions just yet, but he would certainly keep it tucked away for safekeeping, to see if he could put the puzzle together before he simply had to give up and just ask. A thought occurred to him - had the other ever met a fox? Or was he the only one experiencing that awe and slight confusion of happening upon a new creature entirely? I'm sorry it's so short! I hit a bit of a wall with what to write!

> Valentin < While he knew that others often noticed his quirks, Val liked to believe he was thought of as a normal feline. Perhaps one with a short attention span, but he did not want creatures, especially ones he wanted to befriend, to know of his oddities. He was not crazy, Valentin knew that. A crazy cat would have thought his friends real, treating them the same way he treated flesh and blood. But Val was no fool. It was obvious that Philly and Gaston were figments of his imagination, and while he was still trying to discover why they existed, he accepted their presence as a part of his life. Nevertheless, the did not fill the empty void inside him. One that can only be filled with the true companionship of another, the one that reminded him of his own loneliness as a result of his inability to communicate properly or form close bonds. Valentin was not slow in the head or deranged, no, he was just too distracted, too observant of the unimportant things to pay attention to what really mattered. The few friends he had ever had had told him this much, saying he had not really cared about them and only wanted to know what was going on inside their heads. But was that not caring? Emotions where simply the brain being affected by its surroundings, responding to events, both past and current, and responding. Why should Val care about the emotions themselves for than the reasons behind them? Was finding the reasons not the key to controlling them? The fox's voice tore him from these thoughts and he looked up, a look of bewilderment on his face before it quickly morphed into recognition. " Ah, I get that quite a lot, I assure you I take no offence," he nodded his head respectfully, " While I do not know my exact species, I know my father was a domestic cat and my mother came from somewhere far north, where there is always snow and where rock meets the sky." This fox was definitively an inquisitive individual, and Val already felt they would get along. He had heard stories of the cunning and sly foxes, many of them negative, and Drokhan definitely fit this description, at least appearance wise. While Val could not judge the canine's personality yet, the fox's twinkling eyes and pointed nose exemplified mischief. " I've never happened on another like you and I'm a very curious individual, you see..." Val chuckled lightly. " If you had never met my mother, that is not surprising." He tilted his head to the side, eyes sparkling joyfully, " And I doubt you ever will again" authgrim

action speech thoughts cerkowah The fox swished his tail and he perked up. Well, at least he hadn't offended the strange creature before him. Offending him wouldn't do Drokhan's curiosity any sort of good, and so he knew he must keep on this individual's good side. Of course, he wasn't so selfish as to only want information from him, but that, of course, would be a major foundational factor in anything this might become. "Well I'm certain that you do get that quite a bit. I've been around here for a few months, and while I know I haven't seen everyone, I've never seen another quite like you. Do you know if there are others, or if you are the only one of your kind? I've yet to met another fox myself, which is quite strange. We're just as bad as rabbits, sometimes." He chuckled at the last part. He tilted his head and nodded. Cat. What was a cat? And did that mean that his mother was also a cat, or was their interbreeding much like that between dogs and wolves? 'Well,' Drokhan decided. 'Whatever a cat is, it must have been half of what Valentin looks like.'He thought further for a moment before stating, "it sounds like she was from the mountains." He wondered if that explained the fluffy coat and the grey-hued fur, or if that was obtained from the 'cat' part. Were both parts technically cat, or well... Whatever the cat equivalent of 'canine' was, as wolf-dogs were fully canine, but part wolf and part dog? His ears twitched, and he looked at the other fully. "Well that's certainly a shame," Drokhan commented. He swished his tail thoughtfully before he finally asked the question that had been nagging at his mind since he first started observing this half-cat named Valentin. "Again, don't think of me as rude, I beg you... But what were you looking at in the bushes?"

> Valentin < The cat tilted his head to the side, his yellow eyes glinting. This fox was definetely interesting, but Val's answer did not seem to satisfy him. Was he unaware of what a cat was? That would be odd, he figured most creatures had seen canines, considering how common the domestic cats where, especially around human structures. Hoping to continue this conversation, Val smiled, completely willing to answer any of the fox's inquiries. " I'm afraid I do not know the answer to your question, as my mother only just barely remembers her original home. She was captured by humans I believe and brought here, she doesn't even know how far away her original home was. But, I figure there must be more like me, as someone had to parent my own mother, but I highly doubt those particular individuals are still alive." Valentin nodded his head in the direction of the fox, " While I am aware of your species, I have never met a fox before. You're bright pelt through me off a little, I must admit" Valentin hoped this was not offensive, as he was aware not all creatures were as forgiving as him. He found the comments about rabbits weird, as he was not aware how the two were related in any way. Did foxes not eat rabbits? Or did they have some sort of relationship he had yet to observe? Slightly confused, Val decided this would be something he would ask about later. Valentin thought about that word for a moment, 'mountain.' Were those the rocks that touched the sky? The name did not seem appropriate to Val, but he supposed it was true. " Have you ever been to the mountains yourself? Perhaps I can learn more about my mother's heritage." The idea of towering hills covered with massive rocks seemed crazy, and Val tried to imagine them. Were they really so big that they touched the sky? His mother once told him that some were so tall you could see them poking through the clouds, but how could something really be that big? Slightly taken aback by the fox's question about his behaviour, Val blinked in surprise. So he had noticed... This fox was far more observant than Valentin had given him credit for. " Ah, that. I'm sorry if I spooked you, I merely saw a bird," he explained, dipping his head. Hopefully the fox would believe it, Valentin had gotten much better at hiding his mental state and he did not want the fox to find him even more strange.

action speech thoughts cerkowah He listened with his head tilted to the side. Humans? What were humans? "Ahh... Were humans the two-legged things that use to walk around?" That must have meant that his mother had been old, Drokhan decided. He himself had never known anyone that had seen humans, but his father had once told him of their existence, and how they'd built things with their flexible paws and forced other creatures to be subservient to them. He had even said that it was because of the two-leggeds that dogs even existed since they had changed the blood of the wolf within them to something different. Drokhan at the time hadn't really believed the stories, but now... Now he wondered how true they had been. He'd known that his father himself had never seen one, but his grandfather had, as the old greyed fox had told him once. Drokhan pondered at how strange it was that individuals three generations prior to himself had seen creatures that he had come to think of as largely mythologized. He'd seen the ramshackle structures, but most were in states beyond repair, and he'd assumed that that had been the extent of humanity's reach and prowess. It had never occurred to him that some of the other things might very well be true about them. He suddenly found himself quite gracious that they were no longer around - if they could build things a thousand times his size, and take other creatures from their homes, and move them a thousand horizons away, then he didn't dare think what they could have done if something hadn't stopped them in their tracks. "Well, I suppose that that is fair. I'd imagine if they were still around, they'd be so old that they'd be dust," he meant this humorously, of course. "I'll admit that I never knew what a cat was before. I know I don't know everything, but it is always a joy to learn something new." He flashed a toothy grin and swished his tail. "It throws some off. My pelt isn't even the brightest - my father was a bright one. Brighter than the brightest orange leaves at the time that they change colors. I'm rather dull compared to him, I must admit. But I do suppose he's dead by now, so it's a shame you couldn't see his vibrancy. I'm sure he wasn't the only one of that color though. So, I'm sure you'll stumble upon another when there are more foxes in the area." He found himself rattling on a bit, and eventually rounded off his statement just to silence himself and let the other speak. Drokhan shook his head and stated, "no, sadly I've never been there myself. But I've heard tale of them before. I've heard that they're massive things, like teeth rising up into the sky. They're made of rock, with forests and meadows on their flanks, until they get so high that there's nothing but rock and snow. I've heard that you can see the massive birds - eagles I believe they're called - circling the tips of them. I've heard that there are creatures there that can snatch those massive birds right from the sky, and eat them." He did his best to describe what he himself had heard, although he was painfully aware that he did not do the description that he had gotten justice. The one he'd heard had made the mountains sound terrifyingly beautiful, filled with wonders and dangers almost beyond imagination. That angular, narrow head tilted to the side when the cat answered. A bird? Somehow Drokhan didn't believe this, but he didn't press further. He decided that he would watch, to figure out if his suspicions were true. He didn't think Valentin less for it - if he had a mental affliction, well that was just fine with Drokhan. He'd encountered others who were far more unsettling. Although, he considered, perhaps the cat didn't have an affliction? He'd never encountered another that had imaginary friends, but he remembered as a kit how he had played make belief and conjured playmates for himself. Could it be possible that a grown individual could also do this? He wasn't sure, but given two options, he decided to see which would pan out to likely be true. Drokhan knew at some point, he would figure it out - nothing stayed hidden forever, especially from the prying eyes of a fox.

> Valentin <
Val had never met a creature who was unaware of the humans. While his mother had known very little of them, her stories had explained enough. They were evil creatures, poking animals with sharp, shiny sticks and injecting them with liquid fire. While his mother insisted she have lived a satisfied life with the humans, Valentin could not agree. She had been sick often, never sick enough to die, but her breathing was weak, and while she was in the wild she often had to rely on her mate to hunt for her. She had claimed it was merely old age, but Valentin believed it was the human's fault. Either they had hurt her in some way, or this place was so different from her old home that it was toxic. Either way, the humans had caused it. His mother had claimed they fed her well, and she never went hungry or had to worry about predators, but Valentin could not see how that was worth it. Luckily, he assumed because of his mixed blood, Val did not share his mother's ailments, and he was able to live and breath fine.
"Yes, the humans are the ones who built those massive structures. My mother said she lived in one of them, but the inside was changed to look like a forest. She said she hadn't even known she had left home until she escaped and saw the cold, smooth outside. How humans brought chunks of the wild into their own dens I will never understand" Valentin shook his head wistfully, "I almost wished I was alive when they were, then I could observe them myself and not have so many unanswered questions,"
Yes, that would have been wonderful. Getting to observe the humans on his own, discovering their oddities on his own instead of having to listen to stories. But then again, perhaps without the human's disappearance he would not exist. As his mother had said, she saw no other creatures during her time with man, so if she had not escaped she may have never even conceived. and she would have died on her own, instead of with her loved ones. The thought saddened Valentin, he had known how hard the death of his father had been on her. She was not a social creature, but everyone still needed companionship.
Valentin returned the fox's smile, "Yes. I imagine I am quite the sight. I have heard of foxes before, but I must admit you are the first specimen I have ever met myself, and I must say you do not fit the rather negative tales of my childhood." No, the fox was quite the opposite. Valentin was not worried about his attitude suddenly changing, morphing into a wild animosity that only craved blood. Drokhan seemed gentle, kind. He was rather smart and observant, but Valentin would not call it malicious or cunning.
"I imagine the mountains are quite spectacular. If I was not so small and feeble, I would try to travel there myself," he shrugged his shoulders, "But sadly. that is the way of life. The small and stunted are not made to travel, we stay close to what we know." The cat imagined Drokhan did not share this sentiment, as the fox's long legs and speed could likely carry him many miles without rest. While he wished to have this freedom, Valentin was not jealous. What use was one's mind if they could not send themselves anywhere they pleased after all? All he needed was his mother's stories, and while he craved to see them with his own two eyes, he had enough information to picture them. Picture the stiff, cold stone beneath his paws, speckled occasionally with moss and tufts of hard grass. He could see the clouds, creating a fine mist over everything as the mountains passed through them.
Valentin knew the fox had not believed his lie, he could see it on the creature's face. But no matter, Val was no longer afraid of Drokhan judging him, as the fox seemed quite open and friendly. Philly and Gaston had decided to take a break now that Valentin's need for conversation was sated by the red animal, so he was able to properly focus on the conversation at hand.
